Preparing for Mosimann's, our new catering service. Club closure 26th October to 1st November inc.

As we change from our present in house catering service to a Mosimann’s  service starting at the club on 2nd November, the club first floor service will need to close the week commencing 26th October.

This will enable our new contractors and staff to do an inventory of equipment, stock take and deep clean as well as some staff training.

We will however be opening the bar on 29th October in the evening when a table service will be offered to those listening to the talk “On the Shoulders of Giants”

I am excited about this change, and many of you have expressed enthusiasm about our new arrangements, as we look forward together to a new service on our first floor.

The Cruising Division Talks and Lectures

The Cruising Division’s first talk of the Winter Series was by David Bailey and sold-out soon after it was advertised. David delivered a beautifully illustrated, interactive lecture to an appreciative audience and his remarkable wildlife photographs drew many gasps of delight. Although he couldn’t offer his new publication ‘Wildlife Wanderings’ on the night, we did have a sneak preview and it is available online – click here

This lecture has been uploaded onto You Tube and can be enjoyed here. Sincere aplogies to those waiting patiently to watch live on Zoom, we had a slight technical hitch that couldn't be resolved in time for the start of the lecture.

The second lecture is ‘Embarking the D-Day Armada’ by Stephen Fisher at 18.30 hrs this Thursday 22nd October 2020. More Detail – Click here

The bar opens 17:30 for a 18:30 start.  Book your table NOW, tables of 6 max. See the menu here. Click here for all you need to know. More 2020 Lectures.

LHC Need a new Harbour Commissioner, Volunteers wanted

Annual Club Sailing Review - Saturday 5th December 2020

Members are reminded that the Annual Sailing and Club Review will take place at 11:00hrs on Saturday 5th December 2020. This is a month later than previously advertised.

The purpose of the meeting is to allow informal discussion on the general affairs and activities of the Club. This review will be held virtually, and more details will be announced shortly.

Members are reminded that the occasion is not a “General Meeting” and that, therefore, no binding decisions can be made.

Members intending to raise a specific topic or issue at the meeting are requested to advise the General Manager – Operations beforehand so that any necessary research can be undertaken to enable the matter to be dealt with fully.

Applicants should have a knowledge of:

  • Accounting procedures
  • Bookkeeping

They should preferably be experienced in SAGE accounting software and have administration skills.

A willingness to be a flexible member of the team to support other activities and meet the needs of the Club is needed, therefore a knowledge of the Club operations would be an advantage.

Many thanks to the first floor volunteers from the RNLI

As well as helping the Club with service on the first floor, volunteers are also helping the RNLI. At a recent event non-member visitors, being unaware of the custom of the Club, tipped some of the volunteers who served them.  The volunteers promptly put the cash into the RNLI box on the bar.

The generosity of the visitors and the time and thought given by the volunteer Members are much appreciated by the Club and the Lymington RNLI.

Marilyn Holmes

Member of the Lymington RNLI Branch Committee

COVID - 19 regulations applying to social evenings at the Club - from RCH

A quick reminder that the Government’s current (mid October) set of rules and regulations relating to social gatherings require the Club to make you aware of the following:

In order to hold an evening with a lecture, a film or a quiz, we are required to offer food and drinks.  Because of the need for social distancing which affects the number of people we can safely accommodate (48) the Club has decided that if you wish to attend, priority will be given to those who order a meal.  If there are still tables available after 48 hrs before the event, you will be able to book a table for drinks only up until 1hr before the start. Just turning up is taking a chance, but not impossible.

There will be a choice of 4 mains and 4 desserts, the menu will be published in advance and you will order your food on the night. A main will cost £13.00 and a dessert, £6.25 for October.

You can book a table for up to six people in advance.

For the rest of the requirements, please read carefully here, particularly if you wish to attend ANY club related functions.

A super week for the Scow Potterers

A turnout of 11 Scows on Tuesday the 13th, followed by 17 on Thursday, and all this in mid-October and in northerly winds – it speaks well for the resilience of our thriving Scow Division.

On Tuesday, we started with lighter than forecast winds, against an ebbing tide, and so we enjoyed a gentle reach up Pylewell Lake,  where we played and collected our ‘Werthy’ rewards.  A lovely close reach brought the fleet homeward, re-entering the River just after the ferry passed harmlessly by. Thence began a rewarding beat home.

Our Thursday Potter was a bit windier but in glorious sunshine, and many were happier with a reef.   We had a testing beat, again through Pylewell, and then into the top of Tanners Lake. Some were tempted to have a go through the Cut, it was a close call but, with a North Easterly wind and an ebb through the Cut of 2/3 knots there was, as a fleet, no room for error; discretion won over valour and we turned away.   A broad reach brought us all home in good time with lots of happy faces on the slip.

Graham Neal.

In Memorium - Neil Carden 1956 - 2020

Neil was out cycling with friends when he unfortunately hit a pothole and sustained a head injury putting him in a coma. After a few days he died in Southampton hospital.

 His wife Claire writes -

“Lots of you lovely people have brought or sent gifts and flowers. I really appreciate all of these, not for the gifts themselves but for the fact that you want to mark the loss of Neil.

While visiting the hospital we frequently had to sit in a ‘family’ room. (AKA the Neuro ICU Waiting Room) I have rarely sat in a place so dirty and down at heel, depressing and miserable. In the near future I would like to raise money to have the room updated and redecorated. I have no idea if they would agree and it would no doubt have to wait until Covid is controlled. “

More hot Feva news for 24th - 25th October

The RS Feva Class Association has now confirmed that the Grand Prix event on the weekend of 24/25th October will be hosted by the Royal Lymington and the entries will be limited to 40 boats.  We will be providing race management and support RIBs, so no doubt there will be a call for volunteers soon.

Several of our Fevas plan to take part and many of the youngsters already have their fingers poised on their keyboards (or their thumbs on their keypads) for the moment when the entry system comes on line.

Two RLymYC Sailors nominated for "Youth Sailor of the Year"

The View from the Editor's Chair

The front page of the site should now be showing a quick links button to what we consider to be an interesting part of the Club Website. Feel free to have a browse.

We have started to re-design the “On the Water” tab and hope to have this implemented within the next two weeks so be prepared for changes.

Please try to send photos into the Club competition, when they are displayed it does brighten up the room a lot and there must be a prize. You only have two weeks.

Volunteers continue to help at many sessions, and the feedback we are getting is very positive even if tipping is not allowed (see above). The volunteers are also enjoying being helpful as well as the “jolly bants” (as my son would say) that occurs.

You will notice another photo from Paul French heads this week's Newsletter. This is because I have not received any other offerings. While Paul is a professional, and needs no “processing” we have the technology to turn any photo into something very reasonable for the Newsletter, so do not be intimidated, submit and be surprised. May I suggest that when you are out with your fleets or just on a walk around Lymington, whip that phone out, take a snap, then send it to me. I suggest there should be a sail in it somewhere.

I hope you enjoy the Newsletter
