Some good sailing News - Huzzah!

Keep the date free -  Sunday 27th December. The Club will be running the Peter Andreae trophy for the Junior section. Organised by Sarah and Andrew Richards with support from Roy Froud who will be the RO.

Some other good news for the future, we are looking forward to welcoming four outside events next year - the Finns in May, the VXs in July, the J80s in late August and the Nordic Folkboat nationals - all in addition to our regular Club programme.

Saturday's Virtual 'Afternoon Tea'

Well what a lovely group of people came to the virtual afternoon tea on Saturday.  We had all dressed our tables, which gave Chef Nick Hebditch a hard task to pick just one winner.  A beautiful variety of teapots, including sparkling solid silver, to tablecloths hand made by special friends. There were also wedding and heirloom china (some from China) and ornaments brought back from world travels, crystal glasses, English roses and flowers, candles, napkins, bunting, tea and champagne. It was surprising how many tables had similar themes.  Every table was charming, even those modestly described as being in a simple setting and the overall atmosphere transcended zoom.

The highlight of course, for everyone, was the food. Lots of positive feedback about the delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes.  Nick’s fun quiz was designed to get us talking and some were adamant that a scone should always be pronounced as if rhyming with gone, even tho’ that is not correct, so don’t get us started on whether jam or cream should go on your “small circular baked item”  first, but it’s jam if you hail from Cornwall.

The prize for the best dressed table went to the Johnsons, and you can see the picture here.  Nick particularly liked the personal history of all the items on the table and promised to deliver their bottle of Mosimann’s champagne that evening.  Well done to the Laymans’ too for persevering, despite their low bandwidth cutting them out a few times. One of the downsides to living in beautiful Hampshire.

It was great to “meet” Nick and he welcomes your comments on Mosimann’s food, whether that be a take-away or dining at the Club.  Thank you all so much for joining in.

Report on the Cruising Lecture No.7 Where angels fear to tread

Last Thursday’s Winter Lecture was a delight, delivered to a record Zoom audience by fellow member, Nigel Lang. Nigel described the origins of the Observer Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race, ‘OSTAR’ in 1960 and how he accepted friend Mike McMullen’s invitation to compete in the 1976 race.

After minimal preparation & brief single-handed qualifying voyage, he was one of 125 skippers at the Plymouth starting line on 5th June when Nigel set out to sail the Atlantic in his Contessa 26 - ‘Galadriel of Lothlorien’.

His ensuing story was gripping, with vivid accounts of five storms in succession, close encounters with icebergs & a fishing fleet, and even a mid-ocean collision with the 20th century equivalent of the ‘Marie Celeste’.

Despite these challenges, Nigel arrived in Newport, Rhode Island “by the skin of his teeth” after 48 days and was one of only 73 to finish the race within the 50 day limit. Tragically Mike McMullen and one other competitor lost their lives during this gruelling event.

Present for the Grandchild

Who can forget the cadences and rhythms in the dulcet tones of Charlotte Green, while waiting in Port to leave. Your opportunity to teach your child/G’child what Viking, North Utsira, South Utsira really means, and where they are. Vital for the potential cruising sailor.

This hand crafted, hand painted A4 sized puzzle features every sea area as a separate piece, with each piece lifted with an integral pin, ideal for the smaller finger. The area name is written on the underside, so can be used as a shape test too. Good for the developing brain.

These puzzles are offered to all RLymYC Members at a discount price of £50 each inc. P & P

The View from the Editor's Chair

Who reads the Newsletter? Are we reaching our Membership? Well yes and no. Recent statistics show that of ~2300 Members we deliver to ~1350 of which ~740 actively read the newsletter. This may include those who only glance at it tho’. A lot of this is due to Members not realising that they HAVE to opt in under GDPR. So if you have a friend, colleague, relative or neighbour who is a Member and does not get their “very exciting” newsletter, pls get them to email [email protected] and ask to be put on the list. It would be great to get this to >2000.

The Virtual Afternoon Tea was enjoyed by many. I have to admit there was so much to eat I was quite stuffed at the end – very good value indeed. The winner of best dressed table (and free bottle of Champers recipient) was very pleased. Mosimann’s assure us they will be offering this service within the Club during next year.  (Govt. willing) Watch this space for announcements.

Our lead photo, in black and white won the recent photo competition, however I thought it looked lovely in full colour. It deserved an airing.

Myself and Mrs Editor are looking forward to the Gala Dinners – We will still be isolated in our 2m bubble within the Club but if you hear us shouting across the room – it will be with the exuberance of being released and allowed to be out and about again. Look out Lymington!

Our cruising lectures are attracting an increasing audience on a weekly basis. Always such interesting topics.

I do hope you enjoy the Newsletter, as I do every week. I shall be very interested to see if the number of readers increases (or not). Any suggestions for improvements, please let me know.

Annual Club Sailing & Business Forum

Your Flag Officers have been considering how we can run the Annual Sailing and Club Review planned for Saturday 5th December at 11:00.

It will not have escaped your attention that we are in the middle of a global pandemic and we have reluctantly concluded that having several hundred members at the Club for the Review is, therefore, impossible.

Nevertheless, we view it as extremely important that we have an opportunity to summarise what we have done in the last year and present our proposals for the future so that you can consider them and ask questions of us.

We have considered several alternatives, and after careful consideration we propose to run the meeting remotely as an on-line presentation followed by questions and answers.  We will be sending further details to all members which will enable you to use your home computer, tablet or phone to ‘attend’ the meeting.
