Racing Plans for 2021

Thanks to the efforts of Andrew and Sarah Richards, we are able to run the Peter Andreae Trophy regatta for Club members under age 21 on Sunday 27th December.  Full details are on the Club website (see https://rlymyc.org.uk/PeterAndreae). Online entry is via Webcollect and entries, £5 per boat, close on 20th December.  For this regatta, the racing will be held in Teras for the younger and smaller helms.  The older sailors will compete in Scows and will be permitted to take a crew who is under 21 from their household if they wish.  Cash prizes will be awarded. The event will be run using a Round Robin league system with a final comprising 1, 2, or 3 final races depending on the time available.

Following discussions with the Royal Solent Yacht Club, both Clubs have now decided that it will be impossible to run the popular Needles Relief Regatta scheduled for Saturday 12th  December 2020.  The Royal Solent, in Tier 1 of the Coronavirus restrictions, cannot accommodate visiting sailors onshore and the RNLI cannot offer its usual rescue display on the grounds of cost.  Since much of the fun of this race includes the aftermath in Yarmouth, the two Clubs have decided not to run the event even in a cut down format this year.

Some Essential Reminders & Updates

Covid-19 regulations

Just to remind ALL Members that Covid Tier 2 Regs are in place. It is necessary to wear  a mask when entering the Club. It keeps you and all staff, safe.

Mosimann’s Click and Collect

See the link below (with new items and pricing)  and instructions for ordering,  or even the front page of the Web Site, where there is also a link. This service will continue.

The Annual Ladies Lunch

Despite our best efforts, we are unable to host the Annual Ladies Lunch, which is very disappointing for all.  Roll on next year when we hope we can fill our 2021 diaries with lots of social events to look forward to at the Club.

Santa’s Grotto

It is with regret that the Social Committee have been informed that Santa will be unable to visit the RLymYC this year, this is due to Covid restrictions in Lapland. His Chief Elf,   N. Savetree,  hopes to send him next year.

Needles Relief - Last cruise of the year

Saturday 12 December was in the Cruising Division’s calendar as Needles Relief - but the traditional links with RNLI and the Royal Solent aren’t available this year.

Nevertheless, Yarmouth Harbour is open for day visitors and they are keen to see as many boats as we can muster. Sailors will be arriving between 11:30 and 12 noon, and self-catering when they arrive. We have 10 boats indicating interest so far, but we’d love to see more - disappointed racers very welcome.

If you want to join us please email [email protected], or send a message on WhatsApp to 07801 414517.  Detailed instructions will follow.

We’ll see you there.

George Trevelyan Late Again

Captain of Cruising

Staff Announcement

On behalf of the Flag Officers, General Committee and Club Members, I would like to wish Kerry Priday, General Manager Finance and Admin. all the very best in her future endeavours.

Kerry’s role terminated on the 30th November and we acknowledge her efforts and thank her for her commitment throughout the last 13 years of working at the Club.

Vice Commodore

Youth Sailors of the Year

In the competition mentioned previously in this newsletter, where we urged you to vote for our sailors, our Oppie sailor Santi Sesto-Crosby has been voted runner up for 2020.  A very well earned distinction in difficult times.  The winner was 420 sailor Bettine Harris from Bristol Corinthian YC.  Santi was closely followed by Aero sailor Tim Hire, also an RLymYC member.

Santi was well positioned to win the Oppie Worlds this year, but Covid intervened.  Nevertheless he went abroad and won the Nations Cup at Lake Garda, and had a podium position in Slovenia at the European Championships.

In 2019 we also had runners up in 420 sailors Vita Heathcote and Charlotte Boyle.  Vita has now launched an Olympic 470 campaign for 2024

Club Christmas Help

The Club are keen to ensure that Members have a happy time this Christmas though we recognise it may not be the normal Christmas celebration that would have been expected 12 months ago. Families may not able to get together, which may leave people without the normal support and company that would be expected.

The Club is here to support its Members and we would ask that if you need a little help this year with shopping, or would like a phone call or a socially distanced visit, please contact the Club by phone or by email  [email protected] and we will pass on your details to volunteer Members who are keen to help out. More physical help is likely to be limited to the New Forest area, however phone contact and an update on Club activities can happen for any Member.

If you are willing to volunteer your help to support other Members in this way please also register this with the Club by phone or by email at [email protected]

Mosimann's Numbers - An Explanation

Some Members have been confused as to what is happening when we have presented them with their bills. (Who likes a bill ?) The Menus at the tables (and those available on the Website)  show the Member’s prices and a comment to say that non-members pay a 12.5% surcharge.

When you first receive your bill for checking, accepting or querying, the prices will NOT be the Member’s prices but those with the 12.5% added on. You will also have the option to add a “gratuity” at this point. The Members’ discount is only applied when you pay with your card. You will then be issued a receipt with the 12.5% discount and gratuity applied and the individual item prices will match those that were specified on the Menu, and of course your Member’s card will be debited.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

Mark Mosimann

Exhibition of Members' Art

The 2020 Exhibition is now open in the Island/Needles Room at the Club.  Please come and look at it.   You can vote for your favourite picture by emailing [email protected] or [email protected] with the number and name of the work.  If you wish to buy anything, please contact the artist directly (Artists’ details are with each picture).

To view it safely, please enter by the door nearest the Bar and go round in a clockwise direction, making sure that you wear your mask at all times and maintain social distance.

The Exhibition will be open from 4th December and throughout the Christmas and New Year period whenever the Club is open.

Scow Walks

After a month’s delay due to the second lockdown, the Scow Division winter walks have recommenced. We started with a sea wall walk on Thursday, 3rd  December. Seventeen members, divided into 3 groups, braved the somewhat inclement weather. Above is a photo of six suitably clad souls proving that not only can they social distance, but also wear the correct clothing for the weather.

Winter lecture No 9. Bird watching in the dark

On Thursday 10th December at 18:30 hrs we will present our guest speaker, Graham Giddens. He is a freelance Lymington ornithologist who will talk about what owls, woodcock and warblers do at night - including their roosting behaviour, migration and nocturnal feeding. As a Licensed Bird Ringer, Graham is currently involved in local ringing studies of avocets, woodcock, snipe, barn owls and migrant warblers. Some of the birds he has ringed in and around Lymington have turned up as far away as Russia and South Africa. His talk will be held in the Island and Solent Rooms, where we can safely accommodate up to 30 dining members in their ‘bubbles’, all social distanced and in full compliance with the prevailing health guidelines.

Please note that there will be no Zoom broadcast nor ‘Lecture on demand’ recording this week.

To book your table for a great lecture followed by a fine Mosimann’s dinner please email [email protected]

Please remember that we are in Tier 2 and you can only book a table to eat with members of your household or support bubble.

Mosimann's weekly Dinner Menu will be available.

Christmas Decorations

Well what a merry band of volunteers turned up at very short notice to help put up the Christmas decorations last Tuesday.  Current restrictions meant we had to limit numbers so those present had to work hard, while wearing masks, like the superheroes they are.

Very impressive to see the agility of Club Members, nimbly going up and down ladders like mountain goats, whilst following the safety guidelines to the letter. I do hope you will go and have a meal now the Club has re-opened and enjoy the food, while admiring the festive decorations and twinkly lights; it’s a cheery sight indeed.

The decorations will be taken down on Tuesday 5th January 2021 and we have a few volunteers already. Please get in touch if you are interested in helping.  At present we don’t know how many people we will need/be allowed as we await further government announcements.

Report on the Cruising Lecture No.8 Ataturk in History

With the lifting of Lockdown 2 just one day earlier, a select and socially distanced audience was able to enjoy last Thursday’s Winter Lecture at the Club, followed by a fine and substantial Mosimann’s dinner (and Scotch eggs were definitely not on the menu!).

This evening was also a Club first, when a sizeable online audience was also able to watch and hear this lecture live from the comfort of their own homes via Zoom.

Our guest speaker, Commodore Richard Bridges R.N., delivered a well-illustrated, comprehensive account of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s rise from relative obscurity to become the victorious Turkish Army Colonel at Gallipoli in 1915 and ultimately his country’s first secular, democratic President – ‘The father of modern Turkey’.

For more details of Commander Bridges and how to access the lecture, as well as how to support the Royal British Legion

The View from the Editor's Chair

This week’s newsletter is packed with good news. Sailing things are forecast to happen, Mosimann’s appear to be doing well and seem well appreciated, our junior sailors are winning awards, art exhibitions are available to view, the Club looks well Christmassy after all the decorations are up, scow walks are restarting and the price of Club Gin has gone down. What is not to celebrate.

There is always some ying to the yang, as we say farewell to Kerry. “Fare Well!”

There are many special Club offers available this week. I think it is the season. After last week’s Jigsaw,  one can feel the Christmas aspect creeping in to all of the offerings in this Newsletter.

Once again volunteers have put their heads above the parapet to offer their time and enthusiasm to get Christmas fare to our less able Members. Please take advantage of this offer if you need it, as it gives great pleasure to the giver, as well as the receiver. You will be doing the givers a favour.

Myself and Mrs Editor are still looking forward to the Gala Dinners – It is our turn this next weekend.

The Annual Club Sailing and Business meeting went off without a hitch from where I was sitting in a layby. Looked quite slick from my viewpoint. Well done all.

Every week I hope you enjoy the Newsletter.  We hope you like the subtle changes this week. Constant Improvement is the watchword. Or,  “Did you like my buttons?” Please let me know how it is perceived.
