Use of Slipway during Lockdown

We are very lucky during this lockdown that the Lymington Harbour Master has kept our slipway open for sailors and paddlers to take their exercise on the river.  I am absolutely certain however that this luxury will be taken away if sailors or spectators are seen congregating near the slipway in groups of more than one household (or 2 individuals from different households).  Going sailing is not an excuse to socialise, even if (inevitably) you see someone you know.  For the sake of everyone who would like to use the river during this lockdown, please be considerate of the government regulations which are designed to protect us all, and keep your distance from others ashore.  Practically that means (except from a single household) that single-handers can buddy up with only one other, and double-handers communicate with any buddies by phone in advance or once they are afloat.

River Room, 'Mission Ambience'

It is very disappointing that three days after starting operations in such style and being so well supported by many members, Mark and Phillip Mosimann and their team have had to shut down until the forecast storm passes through.

On a positive note, the intent is to make the most of the enforced inactivity by improving the ambience and character of the River Room. To that end we are canvassing for a ‘preloved’ dinghy, clinker/Cadet/Heron/Mirror etc, to be given a life extension. This dinghy will be hoisted into the ceiling to be suspended from the beams.

In this way the donating owner will, each time in the Club, be able to look up and be reminded of happy memories afloat. A suitable plaque, not necessarily in blue, could be mounted on the wall nearby.

If any member has such a characterful dinghy (we appreciate that old scows never die,  but if you have one in ill health?) taking up space in the garage or a barn and would like to donate it to an appreciative RLymYC please contact [email protected]  perhaps with a photo. If anyone has constructive ideas as to other possibilities, old wooden blocks for example, please do let us know as we would like to get the mission underway as soon as possible.

Many Thanks

 Michael Derrick

From the Flower Ladies

This year has been very tumultuous for the RLymYC, and with the second Lockdown, flowers have not been a priority. Saying that, on the few occasions I have been to the Club, it felt soulless without the usual floral arrangements waiting to greet one on entry.

All organisations have people that quietly and tirelessly work behind the scenes, we have our devoted flower ladies.

Since taking over the running of the Club flowers, I have been touched by the loyalty and enthusiasm of this special group of Club Members, who have given up so much of their time to make the Club welcoming to both Members and visitors.

December, will hopefully will be a time for us to release all our artistic flair in preparation for the Christmas festivities. We intend to make a wonderful floral welcome for all the Members on their return to the Club after Lockdown.

May I say a big thank you for all the loyal support that I and the Club have had from our very special flower ladies.

Elizabeth Andrews.

Ian Williams strikes Silver in the Bermuda Gold Cup

Congratulations to Club member Ian Williams and his Pindar team who won the Silver medal last week at the World Championship of Match Racing – the Bermuda Gold Cup.  This was the culmination of a round-robin/knock-out series sailed in International One Design keel boats.  Sixteen teams from around the world took part.  The winning team after a bruising final in a fresh breeze was skippered by Taylor Canfield of the USA.

Ian has been there before, having been World Champion six times already, and he must have been a little disappointed, but the Club is very proud of his ongoing achievements.  His team on this occasion included names you might recognise Christian Kamp, Gerry Mitchell and Richard Sydenham. Congratulations to them all from all of us at the Club.

Cruising Awards 2020 - Log Competition

Each November, all RLymYC members are invited to submit a log or other account giving details of their cruises in the season just ending (or earlier seasons if there is a good reason for the delay).

From 2020 onwards the logs should be submitted to the Captain of Cruising by email ([email protected]) as a .pdf attachment not exceeding 25mB, with individual photos reduced to 1mB.  The deadline is 31January 2021. You have lots of time to prepare during this Lockdown.  Logs can include any mix of text, photographs and charts.

All logs will be placed on the Cruising pages of the Club website to enable electronic access by Members: you will find a number of logs from 2019 already available to read there, and a link to others from 2017 in the Club’s history website. https://rlymyc-history.org.uk/chronicles/members-logs/

Because cruising has been disrupted through Covid-19 throughout the 2020 season, there is a risk that there will not be many accounts completed in the log competition this year.  Cruising Sub-Committee has agreed that for the 2020 competition:

You may submit an unpublished log for another year’s cruise, as long ago as you wish

You are invited to describe your lifetime’s enjoyment of boating in all its forms, which might be used to help our panel award the John and Angie Bailie Trophy (for a lifetime achievement in sailing)

The submitted logs will be assessed by a panel of Members who will award the trophies.

For further info on the competition and the trophies to be won Click HERE

The View from the Editor's Chair

It seems the Meteorology Lectures for the Youth & Junior section were a major success with over 70 attendees. I hear there are plans to increase the frequency of these Lectures to one a week – watch this space as they say.

Mosimann’s triumphant start was cruelly set back by having to close three days later. Myself and Mrs Editor tried the ambience and the food and we along with MANY familiar faces were pleasantly pleased and surprised. It is amazing how dimmer lights and a table candle can transform what is a very familiar space, not known for its romance – until now.

I hope that those resident locally have fully taken on board our lead article and that they give the Mosimanns ‘Click & Collect’ service a good try. I appreciate it might be a bit tricky for those in Germany or Australia – er… anywhere except close to Lymington really.

We are all looking forward to Thursday’s Lecture, particularly those who have submitted photos for judging. I promise not to feel so crushed this year – sniff.

We in the WSDT are hoping that there will now be time to focus a few more resources on tidying up the Website, an ideal Lockdown activity.

Another excellent idea for Lockdown is to start, update or complete your cruising logs from 2020 – or even before that, if you have one. You only have two and a half months – but Christmas and New Year are coming and they do eat the time up, albeit nicely.

Nice item from the Flower Ladies, always there doing their bit, not often appreciated. Let’s change that last bit. Well done Ladies.

I see the Zoom Coffee Mornings are back.  We must be in Lockdown.  Turn up early and enjoy a jolly natter.

I do hope you enjoy the Newsletter

Our Club's Click & Collect & Delivery service

Following three highly popular and successful days after opening, our new Mosimann's bar and restaurant has had to close due to the new Coronavirus lockdown. Throughout this four-week lockdown, the Mosimann's team have decided to offer members a Mosimann's ‘At Home’ delivery or Click & Collect service. In this way, you will be able to enjoy the 'Mosimann's experience' in your own home. Starts this Tuesday.

Mark and Phillip Mosimann hope that you will take the opportunity to sample these chef-prepared meals at home. The menu also includes a selection of the Mosimann's wines.

Click here for the Menu, along with contact details for ordering.
