Coodinator change for Monday Evening Dinghy Racing

I was incredibly pleased to be asked by Allan Hill and the Racing Sub-Committee to take over the coordinating role for Monday Evening Dinghy Racing (MEDR).

On behalf of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, I would like to say a huge thank you to Ann Brunskill who has done so much to make MEDR such a success over the last ten years.

I would like to thank Ann for her handover, and I hope to be able to take Monday Evening Dinghy Racing forward with the support of Principal Race Officer Steve Green, Vicky Leen and Luke McEwen and the RLymYC team of Volunteers.

Monday evening race management & safety boat teams have been made up of many dedicated volunteers, without them MEDR would not happen. With the aid of these cheerful and competent volunteers over 120 dinghies have been seen to race on Monday Evenings. (The 5 fleets comprise of Fast, Medium and Slow Portsmouth Yardstick Fleets as well as Gold and Silver Scows).

We are looking forward to re-starting our racing weeks at RLymYC in the coming months of 2021, once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. There are many positions where you could offer support, both on the water or ashore.  We will be offering refresher advice and club training to enable volunteers to feel confident in their roles. We welcome returning volunteers and new supporters.

Volunteers, please contact Vicky or myself.

Social, Physical and Online Activities

Last week we put a piece in the newsletter about our Yoga and Pilates teachers, with their contact details and days and times of their Zoom classes, after talking to them first obviously.  This current lockdown seems a lot harder for us all and these activities really help.  Kettle Bell classes are also being offered.  Full details here

We had several enquiries in the week about yoga from people who did not realise this information was available in the newsletter.  I can only encourage you to read the newsletter each week and perhaps store the email in a separate mailbox so you can refer to it.

ALL the newsletters are stored here.

For more details on Coffee mornings, Happy Hour, and for a word puzzle geared for the younger Club Member who likes watching Television.

Online Art Group 2021

January is over and the Online Art Exhibition is finally coming to an end (see next week’s Newsletter to find out which picture was voted the members’ favourite).

Now that the lockdown has been extended, we have re-started the Online Art Group.

As of this Monday, a new picture will be put onto the Website,to be used as the basis of - or inspiration for - any sort of creative work which the members would wish to share with their fellow Members.

This week’s picture, above, is from the Avon water meadows near Christchurch. Please let Josie Nieves have a .pdf or .jpg of any images you may produce from it by Friday 5 February ([email protected]). We will put these images on the WebSite and then a new pictorial challenge will be presented.

When we are finally allowed out again, we hope that one of the Flag Officers will choose their favourite image from all those sent in. (Peter Blick – beware)

Please take out your paints and pencils, your iPads and papers. While away the hours when it is dark and rainy and cold by letting your creative juices run.... we look forward to seeing the results.

Cruising Lecture No.15 The Race to Scotland

The Cruising Division’s lecture this week is ‘Race to Scotland’ and will be presented by local Poole sailor Ken Fowler via Zoom on Thursday 4th February 2021 at 18.30hrs

Race to Scotland is the remarkable story of one man’s attempt to raise £50,000 for Cancer Research and Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington by undertaking an epic sailing challenge in his ‘bath tub’ sized dinghy - YODA.

Follow the highs and lows of his long-distance dinghy sailing from Land’s End to John o’ Groats. Discover the challenges of enormous whirlpools, fog banks, surf beach landings, navigating through the Scottish islands and giant jellyfish – not to mention the odd RNLI rescue. An emotional roller coaster of a ride.

 To watch live via Zoom

Simply  on Thursday 4th February 2021 from 18.00hrs onwards:

Zoom based Race Team Training

Changes to the RRS affecting Race Management Tuesday 26th Jan.

John Doerr’s talk not only highlighted these changes, but also described the rationale behind some of them. This session was recorded and will be made available on the club website along with Navigational Exercises 19th January 2021.

Safety and Risk Management

This is the next session on Tuesday 2nd February at 1830 hours with Roger Wilson.

We are going to go through the Race Officers' and OODs' legal Duty of Care and how the Club ensures we comply with it. This will include the changes to the Club policies to bring us into line with the MAIB recommendations arising from the death on Windermere last year.

The link to Roger’s talk is here

Cruising Lecture 14. 5 Days in August 1942

The Cruising Division’s winter lecture ‘Five Days in August’ last Thursday 28th January 2021 was a tour de force, delivered by our guest speaker, Andrew Campbell. Although somewhat longer than most of our talks to date, this remarkable account of Operation Pedestal and the convoy of vital Allied supplies attempting to reach the besieged Island of Malta in 1942 attracted our largest Zoom audience to date.

Lectures on Demand

If you missed this lecture, or any of the Cruising Division’s previous talks from Spring 2020 onwards, these are now available online:

Be Part of our Team

We have two new exciting opportunities to join our crew.

We are searching for a part time Membership Services Administrator and part time Accounts Assistant. Both candidates will ideally have a passion for the yachting industry but this isn't essential; experience, enthusiasm, and energy are more important to us.

For more information about both jobs, please click here:

We’d be lost without many of the people who keep the wheels turning who aren’t so visible to our Members and customers and opportunities in these areas can be rare so if you would like to join our expanding team then please email your CV to [email protected].

The Return of the Q Flag - All Cruisers be aware.

As a result of the UK leaving the European Union, our cross-channel trips by boat are going to be subject to requirements and procedures that change the freedom of movement we have enjoyed since joining the European Union.

Below is a link to the Government Notice in respect of this. You are strongly advised to read it and keep a copy handy, particularly if you travel outside British waters:

Well-being in Lockdown

Once again, we find ourselves in another Lockdown, this time I have found some others including myself, are finding it harder to cope. Some of these reasons listed below might resonate with yourselves or someone around you: -

  • Zoom is not the same as face-to-face contact
  • Being unable to be with friends and family, makes life less social,  resulting in a new form of loneliness. (This can even occur when you have a lovely partner living with you)
  • Having completed lots of useful Lockdown projects, discovered new interests, and learnt new skills in the first Lockdown, this time I am finding it harder to come up with an interesting new project and being motivated. Myself and others find this has been exasperated by the weather, because in this lockdown the weather is colder, outdoor pursuits or outdoor exercises are less appealing.
  • Are you feeling a bit dejected, like myself? I love helping others. Now this is harder to do as so many others feel stuck.
  • We are concerned for ALL members of the family and our friends due to the highly transferable strains of COVID-19.
  • Hospital appointments are harder for some people to access, and so you worry for them too.

For more of Pauline’s excellent advice on how to keep yourself better in Lockdown

The View from the Editor's Chair

The photo of the Gold Post Box (one of Lymington’s landmarks) made me think of what we are going to do once Ben Ainslie has lifted the America’s Cup and returned it to where it came from. I thought of painting the top silver, but that seemed a bit pathetic after all the money and effort that was put into gaining it. Suggestions of how we can add to Lymington (once the cup has been won), to the editor please by email.

After the recent week’s grey weather – I thought it best to include Pauline’s article on wellness in case it is needed.

Like a jolly good Full Member I have ensured that my votes have been counted and I have registered for the AGM. I can only encourage everyone to do the same. (See lead article)

I have tried the TV puzzle for the younger Member available on the Online Social page. I stared at it for a very long time, with no result. You know the expression “I really should get out more”, well it really does not apply to this puzzle. Mind you “for the younger Member” doesn’t apply to me either.

I have completed the quiz as proposed by our Chair of the Social Sub Committee, and sent my answers off. I would suggest y’all did the same – why not!. A fun talking point around the dinner table. Good job I could not remember that actress's name, or my pie would have been removed.

The Vendée Globe race is coming to a conclusion, with 10 boats home. There is a small race-ette ongoing between places  15-20, with Pip Hare in Medallia in there, as well as another one between 21-23 with M. Merron in the middle. The RORC report shows the Knights have arrived at St John’s. Let us hope they are enjoying the sunshine

Lockdown in Lymington continues on its inexorable way. We have had more rain. Mrs Editor and myself are wearing a track around the town as we complete our daily walks. Sometimes we are allowed to wave at fellow itinerant ramblers as we studiously avoid each other and complete our way home to be locked up again.

Such fun. Stay safe everyone.

The Vendée Globe S.H. Ocean Race

The first 10 boats have arrived in Sables D’Olonne and it is all about where the last two Brits will end up.  Pip Hare is bouncing through the trade winds having an uncomfortable ride but is safe and warm.

The top three finishers after deducting time spent rescuing a fellow competitor was Yannick Besthaven Maitre Coq IV followed by Charlie Dalin in Apivia then Louis Burton in Bureau Vallee 2 All of these boats had foils.

The top boat without foils was Jean le Cam in Yes we Cam! Who came 4th – just missing a podium place by 3.5 hrs.

It is quite remarkable to note that the top 8 boats all came in within a 24 hr period, which over such a long distance is very unusual.

The RORC Race

This is the final report of the RORC race. As you can see the Knights have finished.

Here are all the stats for this race. Well done to them both.

The Prada Cup

During this last week the other finalist for the Prada Cup was established when the Italian boat Luna Rosa beat the American boat Patriot with The American Magic team onboard. It was a whitewash with the Americans doing really well to patch up their vessel within two days after it had “fallen over”. However it was not to be for them and they are now out of everything. The Italians go on to fight for the Prada Cup against Sir Ben’s Brittania (affectionately known as Rita) with the INEOS UK team on board.  After that it is on to the big one – let us hope Sir Ben and the chaps do the job.
