The Art Exhibition

This year’s Art Exhibition is on display in the Needles and Island rooms. It has been there for several weeks. As so few people have been in to see it due to unwillingness to venture out, Jose has decided to make it an online event too. At the end of this paragraph is a button to allow you to download a PDF file of all the offerings, and thence to encourage you to vote on which one you like best.
Now Peter Blick our esteemed Rear Commodore after much soul searching was able to pick three winning paintings from 24 in our recent painting competition. Jose only asks you to choose one and then let her know by email via [email protected]. Most of the paintings are for sale (should that be For Sail as it is a yacht Club) and each item has a number and a price on the white ticket underneath.

Burn's Night, Saturday 23rd January 2021

The planning for the above is in progress, but COVID restrictions are likely to constrain what we can do. Socially distanced Ceilidh dancing just does not compute in the current climate. However, I have not, as yet, cancelled the Caller, but I have booked them for 2022, so don’t throw your dancing shoes out.
Iona, our Piper, may not be able to join us, however I believe we have two Club Members who play the bagpipes. Gents, if you would be prepared to pipe in the haggis, I will sleep easier with this crucial part of the evening arranged. As to remuneration, when it comes to giving, we stop at nothing, but your name will be in the programme. If you can help out,  please call me on 01590 677921, or send an e-mail to [email protected].
The Team have been allocated their roles, we have a menu proposal from Mosimann’s and the appropriate safe seating arrangements, ticket prices etc. will be finalised the first week of January.
Please put the date in your diary.
For those that have never been to a Burns’ Night, come to ours and have a fun night out, in a safe environment; join the ‘in crowd’.

Club Christmas Lights

On Wednesday afternoon some hardy volunteers decided to decorate the outside of the Club with Christmas lights. Bob Burney provided a whole load of them, which the volunteers tried to work out how they could be strung while maintaining Social Distancing, Mask wearing and not falling off ladders.
By nightfall the result is as you see in the photo and while this may remind the more mature Members of Durin’s Door, this is at least a welcoming sight for anyone able to visit.

Winter Changing Rooms.
From Monday 14th December we are turning the ladies changing    room and disabled changing room into unisex changing facilities.
These facilities including the showers are open for Members use on a first come first serve basis. Please ensure that you follow the guidelines below:
The gentlemen’s toilets will continue to stay open but the changing areas and showers will still be out of action.
Thank you for your cooperation.

'Galapagos or Bust'.  The last cruising lecture of 2020

Last Thursday saw the Cruising Division’s 10th lecture of the current Winter Series, the final one of 2020 – and what a Christmas treat it was.
Club member Nick Ryley & his brother, Peter, delivered a most amusing account of their attempt to sail to the Galapagos Islands in 2019. Peter prefaced this talk with his story of an earlier voyage there in 1986 on the yacht ‘War Baby’. Then Nick and Peter described their most recent trip from the Caribbean, via the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean in an Oyster 56.
As an amateur naturalist, Peter’s interest was perhaps more land-based than Nick’s, so we were treated to many wonderful images of exotic birds, volcanoes, lush islands and some unique Galapagos wildlife. Nick then wove his catalogue of mishaps into this glorious odyssey and demonstrated that the best laid schemes do not always go according to plan!  It’s fair to say that Nick spent rather less time on the water than he had hoped...
This most enjoyable evening passed quickly and we just had time for a couple of questions before Peter had to rush off for the last ferry crossing back to the Island.
So their lecture had something for fans of wildlife and sailing alike, and for those that attended the lecture at the Club,  was rounded off by a delicious pre-Christmas dinner, served up by Mosimann’s.
The simultaneous broadcast via Zoom did suffer from technical issues, but fortunately many of the online audience were able to reconnect and then enjoy the rest of this delightful presentation.
Thankfully Paul French also made a high-quality recording of their talk, which Neil Eccles then produced into another polished ‘Lecture on Demand’ and you can watch this now at:

Congratulations to Sanders Sails

Felicitations and congratulations to Sanders Sails (our local Sail maker in Lymington) who have won first prize in the Outstanding Achievement Category of the “British Yachting Awards 2020”
During the Covid crisis, they have been providing free PPE for anyone who needs it. They started this initiative in March ’20 and are still giving away free PPE now, including “Cuddle Curtains” for care homes.
Peter Sanders would like to thank all Members who voted for them and heard about it via this Club Newsletter. He said “We are very proud to receive this award, but we are only one of many local businesses and volunteers who have been on this journey with us. We are very grateful for all the donations we have received that have contributed to the cost of the materials” Peter noted “ This January coming we will have been in business for 45 years now” Sapphires all round then.

Christmas Club Help

The Club are keen to ensure that Members have a happy time this Christmas though we recognise it may not be the normal Christmas celebration that would have been expected 12 months ago. Families may not able to get together, which may leave people without the normal support and company that would be expected.
The Club is here to support its Members and we would ask that if you need a little help this year with shopping, or would like a phone call or a socially distanced visit, please contact the Club by phone or by email  [email protected] and we will pass on your details to volunteer Members who are keen to help out. More physical help is likely to be limited to the New Forest area, however phone contact and an update on Club activities can happen for any Member.
If you are willing to volunteer your help to support other Members in this way please also register this with the Club by phone or by email at [email protected]

The View from the Editor's Chair
The Gala Dinner went down very well. The food was lovely, the wine very acceptable combined with some very attentive waiting staff, ensured a warm happy feeling inside.  Mrs Editor and I were, as often happens, almost the last to leave. We enjoyed it so much. These are now finished for the time being.
It has been very cold, wet and soggy in Lymington and the New Forest, and while there is not a lot of our official sailing and activities going on, it is interesting to look out of the Club windows and see boats being launched and hardy souls leaving the pontoons for a day’s pootle on the Solent. One can also see the Wheelies cycling group setting off in the pouring rain and howling gale for a healthy ride around the Forest.
The Art Exhibition is still available for viewing, and Jose is still waiting for your votes and opinions, and has now moved it online so more Members can express an opinion. (see above)
This is the last Newsletter of 2020, a year I believe we will all be glad to see the back of. Many of us will have had our Christmas disrupted by the new guidelines, and there is very little we can do about it. Maybe it is  time to review the philosophy of the Greeks in the 3rd Century BC. and be a bit more stoic.
The first newsletter of the New Year will be published on the 11th January.
Every week I hope you enjoy the Newsletter.  The deluge of email feedback has dried up, so it only behoves me to wish all Members a Happy Christmas, a wondrously novel and different New Year and a very cool Yule.  A last cheery thought to finish with - as you read this, we are now approaching summer.

On Shoulders of Giants - Update
Just to let you all know of the progress of the team that we are part sponsoring.
I hope to update this every Newsletter. They will probably have a better Christmas than most of us. At least there are four of them.
