British Optimist National Championships 2019

8/8/2019

Both 2019 Optimist British National Champions hail from the RLymYC; Emma won the Overall in the Junior fleet (not just first girl, but outright first) and Santi, the new British National Champ, won overall in Senior fleet. Henry Heathcote was 2nd and Ella was 3rd British girl and 5th overall.

In regatta Fleet they did well too, Henry May and Dirk Rogers placed 2nd overall.

Everyone from the Lymington team did brilliantly. Sam Webb, Annabelle and Oliver Vines, Freddie Fitzsimmons, Tabitha Davis...

It was a fantastic event, and the club worked beautifully as a team; again organised by Claire Muller with on the water support from Joff. We also hosted five sailors from Spain and Holland, within our team.

Lots of helpful parents were there too – helping with towing and launching ribs, crewing, feeding coaches etc. We had four local coaches all of whom had been RLymYC oppie sailors themselves, not long ago: Ollie Hill, Delfi Sesto-Cosby, Charlotte and Milly Boyle.

It was a great six-day regatta with all kinds of weather conditions, which tested even the most experienced of sailors. International competitors commented that ‘we took the opportunity to do well as it was clear that the best British sailors were getting stressed out, trying to win their home championship, so we could actually focus on climbing up to the top whilst they were racing against each other....’
