Exciting times for our new 29er fleet with a first Regatta win for Royal Lymington Yacht Club squad members Nick Evans (Blackwater SC) and Sam Webb (R Lym YC).
The Typhoon Inland trophy was held over the weekend of 5/6th June at Grafham. A glassy reservoir and a 3- hour postponement greeted the teams on arrival, but the race officer Ian Bullock was confident of getting some racing in later on Saturday afternoon. The fleet launched at 3 p.m. and right on cue, a light and shifty 4-9 knots built. After a couple of false starts, racing got underway.
Nick and Sam sailed really well to win the first two races, rounding the first mark in the top 5 in both cases, and then working their way to the front. A 6th place in Race 3 put them overnight leaders. Sunday dawned windless and with the AP over A signalled mid morning, the boys were delighted to take the Typhoon Trophy, and also First Juniors (U17) award.
Royal Lymington Yacht Club Members Santi Cosby and George May sailed a superb first race to finish 4th, but were hampered by a lack of discard in the series, finishing in 16th place.
Emily Meuller (RLymYC/HISC) with crew Flo Brellisford won the third race to finish 3rd overall and first female team.
The Lymington 29er fleet was only established last summer and it is a tribute to our very pro-active Class Captain Phil Lightbody and great Class coaches Hattie Rogers and Ross Banham, that we are starting to see some really promising results from these keen young sailors. Many of the RLymYC squad will be travelling to the Nationals, Youth Nationals and (hopefully!) Worlds this summer. We wish them every success!
