Wednesday Junior Sailing (WJS) is Royal Lymington Yacht Club's RYA OnBoard Centre, where children aged 8 - 18 can learn sailing and seamanship skills. You do not need to be a member of the Club to attend WJS; in our nurturing environment work at your own pace following our card scheme which it turn leads to RYA qualifications, from Stage 1 through to Instructor level. Recent major studies have shown an ever increasing amount of additional benefits in social and personal development through sport and physical activity. These positive effects are amplified in challenging sports. Six key character attributes that relate directly to sailing are; teamwork, determination, communication, independence, confidence and creativity. So come along, its about so much more than just sailing! We run two sessions every Wednesday afternoon (weather permitting) between late April and the end of September. As well as the water activities sailors will get the use of a buoyancy aid and enjoy a hot drink and doughnut. Children can attend either session 1 or session 2 and are expected to stay for the full session.
To register as a Wednesday sailor you need to be:
We operate a first come first served entry system. Come into the Club via the side gate, and walk around the building to the Wednesday Sailing office. You will see a number of queues, based on our coloured card system. Join the Priority queue if your parent/guardian is helping.
Attend the briefing (times above).
On your first session you will be shown around, including where to get your hot drink and doughnut!
WJS sailors learn a little each week during the child led sessions, and have the time on the water to build on their experiences. There are five cards in the sailing scheme starting with Orange.
We also have rowing and powerboating cards you can do in addition to the sailing.
Everyone gets an orange card on their first session. Experienced sailors need to see the Senior Instructor at the first briefing who will check their ability and put them on the correct card.
A wetsuit, spray top and wetsuit boots are ideal. Alternatively thin warm layers with a waterproof jacket and shoes that can get wet will be suitable. Buoyancy aids are provided.
We welcome new members throughout the year!
