Lymington is a superb base for racing yacht cruisers. Set in the Western Solent, the club's Starting Platform is only 10 minutes away from the town’s marinas and river moorings. If you like tidal challenges, the Solent itself and the Needles Channel will provide them. Some events take us out into Christchurch Bay where there is less tide, but still other navigational issues.
The heart of cruiser racing in Lymington is the Thursday Night Racing Series which runs from the end of April to the end of September, when we race under both IRC and the Lymington Handicap system. Boats range in length from under 6 metres to above 12 metres with every variety in between, including a strong fleet of classic boats. Typically there are some 90 – 100 boats out racing on Thursday evenings split into 6 classes. Prizegiving in our bar and restaurant after each evening’s racing is well attended and very convivial.
Our season starts around the beginning of April with the Spring Series which is run over four Sunday mornings. The club also run a Duo (Two-handed) Series from May to September with courses to the Eastern Solent, Christchurch bay and around the Island. There is also some Saturday racing on certain weekends through the summer. The year is rounded off in December with the Annual Needles Relief race, finishing in Yarmouth where we are hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club.
