Nordic Folkboat Fleet

Nordic Folkboats

The Nordic Folkboat is a timeless classic, attractive and a pleasure to sail. This Swedish yacht was designed as a racer-cruiser and first built in 1942. Well suited to both cruising and racing it makes a versatile and inexpensive route to a great variety of sailing. The Nordic Folkboat appeals to a wide variety of sailors, it is an ideal boat for a family to race, but also providing good one design racing to satisfy the keen racers.

Whilst we tend to concentrate on one-design racing for the Nordic Folkboat, we should also acknowledge the boat’s performance under IRC Handicap. This is epitomized by recent results in the Round the Island Race. In recent years, Nordic Folkboats have taken the overall IRC First Prize, the Gold Roman Bowl, no less than four times! This in addition to six second places and one third place in the same period. No other class or design comes close to this performance under IRC handicap.

Lymington Nordic Folkboat Fleet

The Lymington Folkboat Fleet started in 1998 with a racing fleet of five boats. Over the years this number has grown to over 40 boats in the West Solent and the class now has its own race starts. The age group and the experience of the sailors is very mixed; there is something for all interests.

A great variety of racing and regattas are planned for the whole season. Help is always at hand for those not so experienced from one of the many enthusiasts. Folkboat sailors really enjoy chatting on the pontoon, sharing ideas and helping each other. Protests are rare and any incident is usually settled over a pint in the bar after racing. The social side of Folkboats is real fun, with regular suppers and barbecues throughout the year.

Join our regular racing at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club has a full fixture list with racing for all every week. Boats from Yarmouth regularly join us to swell the number of boats coming to the start line. Nordic Folkboats have their own start in our Gallagher Insurance Spring Series and in our Thursday Evening Racing Series. These are a very popular series and give us all a chance of winding down with a good social get-together after the race.

2021 Nordic Folkboat Points Series

The core of our Nordic Folkboat racing is the Saturday Points Series and the Wednesday Points Series, both of which run from April to October. Most races are scheduled to start at 14:05 (perhaps an hour earlier towards the end of October) and generally run for around 2 hours. Multiple discards remove the need to start all races, thereby allowing flexibility to accommodate both crew availability and prevailing weather conditions.

Additionally, to encourage those further down the fleet, an informal handicap system is run side by side with the "scratch" boats in the Saturday Series which provides an incentive to get out on the water.

2021 Saturday Points Series: 24 April - 18 September
2021 Wednesday Points Series: 28 April - 22 September
