Youth & Junior Fleets

Youth and junior sailing has for many years been a strong and important part of the Club.  We welcome the children of our Members and have a separate category of Junior Membership to enable children to join in their own right.

The aim is to provide opportunities for youngsters to develop a love of sailing - a sport that can be a lifetime interest. A few aspire to the pinnacle and thus far seventeen Olympians have started as RLymYC juniors.  The activities are a mix of training, racing, adventure and social events, and the Club is fortunate to have access to excellent sailing areas in the Western Solent, on the river and on adjacent lakes when a bit of shelter is required.

There are six fleets, all classes on the RYA pathway – Optimist, RS Tera, RS Feva, Laser (4.7 and Radial), 420 and 29er. Each fleet has a Fleet Captain responsible for the annual programme.   Please see the individual fleet web pages for details.
The age range is 8-18, but in exceptional circumstances younger children may be allowed to participate. All require parental consent, and a consent form has to be signed annually by parent or guardian.

Junior and Youth Sailing at RLymYC - A change at the top

October does see some significant changes at the Club in the Junior and Youth sections. Vale Sesto is retiring as Optimist Fleet Captain after seven very successful years in the role.  Sadly, Max and Jeremy Vines are standing down as Captains of Juniors after three years. They have all given huge service to the Club during their time in post, Max and Jeremy will continue to support the Club's junior sailing as Max is taking up a role as special events coordinator and Jeremy remains as the Feva Fleet Captain. Our thanks go to Vale, Max and Jeremy for their support for Junior and Youth sailing at the club. Their roles will be taken over by Sarah and Andrew Richards, see picture (left).

Our grateful thanks to Max and Jeremy for their hard work. As you can see, they appreciated their farewell presents, and all our good wishes.

This summer has seen a huge amount of activity from our Junior and Youth classes at the club once lockdown was lifted and sailing could once again resume. With many national and international events being postponed or cancelled, many of our sailors have stayed local and used the time to hone their skills on the water with over 80 training sessions spread over different classes. These include, a well supported Friday Night race series as well as Junior Race Week.

As ever, none of this would be possible without the support of our volunteers and sponsors. It's not possible to thank everyone in person, so a huge thank you from all of the Junior and Youth sailors to the Club office, Club Boatmen, Race Teams and shore helpers, Rib and Mark laying crews, JSOOD's, Fleet Captains and all of the parents who make this all possible. In particular, thanks go to Shireen Crowe and Joff McGill for Junior Race Week, Steve Green the Race officer for Friday Night racing and its sponsor Ollie Dunford of Dunford Construction Limited.

With the recent appointment of Hugh Stiles as Head Coach and our plans to widen the activities available to our Junior and Youth Sailors, we are looking forward to overwinter training and a great series of activities and events in 2021. If you would like any further information or you wish to support and assist our Junior and Youth activities,  please contact Sarah and Andrew Richards the new Captains of Juniors by email richards.rlymyc@gmail.com
