OUR SAILING FLEETS

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club supports a variety of active fleets, each dedicated to a specific boat class. These fleets cater to all ages and abilities, offering opportunities to sail dinghies, racing keelboats, and cruiser racers. Many fleets also focus on providing coaching and support. Each fleet is led by a Fleet Captain and overseen by our Racing Sub-Committee.

Cruisier Racers

Lymington is a superb base for cruiser racing. The Club Starting Platform is only 10 minutes away from the town’s marinas and river moorings. If you like tidal challenges, the Solent itself and the Needles Channel can provide them. If you want to race with less tide under your keel, Christchurch Bay is the place. The Club hosts a strong fleet of boats racing under the IRC handicap system and our Lymingtton adjusted handicap system.

Dinghies

Royal Lymington Yacht Club welcomes dinghy sailors of all ages. We organise active and competitive dinghy racing for all classes under Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) handicaps and big one-design fleets, including Lymington River Scows, Optimists, RS Teras, Lasers, RS Aeros, RS Fevas, 420s and 29ers. We have a number of dinghies available for hire to members. Launching can be done at any state of the tide. Note that Lymington Harbour Commissioners (LHC) charge a fee for launching; an annual permit is available from LHC or through the club office with a dinghy park permit.

J/80s

Explore the vibrant J/80 Class at Royal Lymington Yacht Club, boasting over 20 boats for spirited competition. Whether you seek friendly camaraderie or intense racing, the J/80 offers an unmatched sailing experience. The Lymington J/80 fleet race together under One Design Rules in our regular race series and other local regattas. The J/80 has an IRC rating of approximately 0.958 and so can also be raced in keelboat handicap fleets.

Nordic Folkboat

The Nordic Folkboat, a Swedish yacht designed in 1942, combines classic appeal with modern performance. Ideal for both cruising and racing, it offers a versatile and cost-effective sailing experience. While popular for family racing, it also excels in one-design racing. There are multiple avenues to become involved; individuals keen on exploring the Nordic Folkboat, either as aspiring crew or future owners, should reach out to the Fleet Captain or a committee member.

Scows

The Scow Fleet organises events throughout the year, designed to provide something for every sailor to enjoy. A regular and active programme is organised including class racing and weekly potters (cruising in company) during the sailing season and talks, walks and suppers in the winter. ??

XODs

The X One Design (XOD) originated in 1907 and remains a robust 21-foot ¾ decked keelboat, with some boats from 1911 still actively racing. The Lymington XOD Fleet, under the Royal Lymington Yacht Club burgee, enjoys heritage moorings on the East side of the river, creating a picturesque scene. From family sailors to Olympic contenders, racing offers excitement for all. With over 40 active boats, the XOD fleet boasts intense competition at the club, fostering camaraderie among sailors. Experienced racers readily assist newcomers and those seeking performance improvements. Even the most accomplished owners encounter challenges fine-tuning their XODs. Post-race tea gatherings on Saturday and Wednesday afternoons provide a friendly atmosphere for competitors and race officials to unwind and share stories.
