Roof Repairs

Please be aware that we have contractors in the Club from Tuesday 27th October conducting roof repairs. We are anticipating the need for them to put up scaffolding towards the end of the week so please take care when moving in and around the forecourt.

Covid-19 regulations

Just to remind ALL Members that the current Covid Regs are still in place. Make sure you have a mask when you leave the house to visit the Club. It keeps you and our valuable staff, safe.

Hot Feva news

Due to the anticipated high winds over the weekend this event was cancelled, leaving many disappointed people both in the Club and also those that were involved “On the Water”

Annual Club Sailing Review - Saturday 5th December 2020

Members are reminded that the Annual Sailing and Club Review will take place at 11:00hrs on Saturday 5th December 2020. This is a month later than previously advertised.

The purpose of the meeting is to allow informal discussion on the general affairs and activities of the Club. This review will be held virtually, and more details will be announced shortly.

Members are reminded that the occasion is not a “General Meeting” and that, therefore, no binding decisions can be made.

Members intending to raise a specific topic or issue at the meeting are requested to advise the General Manager – Operations beforehand so that any necessary research can be undertaken to enable the matter to be dealt with fully.

Jeanne Socrates DID win the bravery award

Amplifon, a global leader in hearing care, organise a yearly prize to reward acts of bravery in at least eight different categories. One of which is the ‘Active Agers’ category for people over 60 years old who have done a jolly brave thing. We are very pleased to say that The 2020 Active Agers winner is Jeanne Socrates. This award recognises an individual aged 60 or over whose attitude and approach to ageing is an inspiration to us all. The winner has to be someone who has achieved significant success in the fields of sport, the arts, business, education or science and technology, or anyone who has accomplished a remarkable feat later in life. Jeanne Socrates became one such when she sailed into the record books last year and became the oldest person to sail around the world solo, non-stop and unassisted. The grandmother from Hampshire said “Winning this award is fantastic. I am absolutely staggered and I feel very humbled” The judges awarded the prize to her saying “At the time of life when people of her tender years are expected to be taking it easy, Jeanne went into turbo charge”  Well done Jeanne and many congratulations.

Sanders Sails Nominated for an award

Sanders Sails (our local Sail maker in Lymington) have received a nomination in the  “British Yachting Awards 2020” in the “Outstanding Achievement Award” category for the work they have done during the Covid crisis. They have been providing free PPE for anyone who needs it. They started this initiative in March ’20 and are still giving away free PPE now, including “Cuddle Curtains” for care homes.

Pete Sanders would like to encourage all Members to vote for them because it would mean a lot to him and his staff.

You can vote here  https://www.britishyachtingawards.com/

Cruising Lectures

Our next lecture is 'On Shoulders of Giants & the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2020' by fellow Club Member Justin Houlton & his crew, this Thursday 29th October at 18.30 hrs. There will be drinks only this evening as the kitchen is closed. Book your lecture table here. Max 6.

Justin, Dan, Rauri and Mark are four friends who will be rowing 3000 miles across the Atlantic this December. They are raising money for two incredible charities, the “My Name’5 Doddie Foundation” for Motor Neurone Disease and “Pursuing Independent Paths” which helps adults with learning disabilities to achieve independence.

They will talk about their preparation to date, training through the COVID-19 pandemic and what they can expect in over a month on the ocean. Not to be missed.

Many thanks to the first floor volunteers from the RNLI Lectures

As well as helping the Club with service on the first floor, volunteers are also helping the RNLI. At a recent event non-member visitors, being unaware of the custom of the Club, tipped some of the volunteers who served them.  The volunteers promptly put the cash into the RNLI box on the bar.

The generosity of the visitors and the time and thought given by the volunteer Members are much appreciated by the Club and the Lymington RNLI.

The View from the Editor's Chair

So, we enter the period of “purdah” when none of us can visit our Club. It won’t last long and many I have talked to are excited about the new changes. I hope we are all looking forward to the Gala Dinners which seem to have sold out already, as well as the normal fare on the week days.

Don’t forget Vince’s Quiz on Monday 9th November  – better book soon.

Many sub-clubs within the Club are now running, albeit under CV19 restrictions. Scows and Potters,  Folk boats and XODs Wheelies (both sorts) and Juniors, all coming out of hibernation ready for the winter and if that is not a mixed metaphor I do not know what is.

The graphic below shows where the Website was accessed from within NW Europe during the week up until the end of September. While Lymington is obviously the heart of our readership, readers can be found from eastern Germany to Brittany and Orkney to Normandy. There are also many outside NW Europe too.

We in the WSDT have spent some time sorting out changes to the website but I fear the Office staff are currently too busy getting ready for next week’s Mosimann’s opening to sort it out. We shall just have to grin and bear it for a bit, but rest assured it is ongoing.

I have received one photo for a possible headline and on that basis, you will see it next week. More would be nice. Also, some text items are always valuable. Please feel free to scribble away.

You will note the new summary of things that are about to happen (Some Essential Reminders etc.) or which have already appeared in the newsletter. This is to stop me using the same article week after week. We try not to bore our members, yet this gives you a nudge about what is coming up.

I do hope you enjoy the Newsletter

Membership Renewals & Subscriptions

I would like to thank everyone who has renewed their Membership with us after such a difficult and unexpected year.

Many Members have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure we have a Club that we all want to visit and I know many of you are excited about sampling the menu which Mosimann’s will start to deliver in November, as well as seeing the development of the Junior Fleets under our new Head Coach Hugh Styles.

A polite reminder for those Members that have not paid yet: please contact our Membership Secretary, Maria Shannon, in the Club office to pay your subscriptions as soon as possible.  As usual, payments received after 20th October will be subject to a 10% late payment fee.

Should you have any questions regarding your Membership please contact Maria as soon as possible, by email to [email protected] or by calling the Club office.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the water and around the Club, enjoying our facilities as best we can until we can get back to normal.   Best wishes to you all.

John Tudor, Vice Commodore
