Youth and Junior sailing activities over half term were wide ranging and well supported.  The mild weather and lively winds contributing to excitement and enjoyment.  Here is a brief rundown, starting with the youngest and working upwards…

  • Five 8-year-olds were on RYA stage 1&2 courses led by Club Instructor Alastair Mansfield
  • Seventeen Optimist sailors had two days of training with Kirstie Urwin as lead Coach. This was followed by a two day informal regatta organised by Fleet Captain Fan Rogers. Two other RLym sailors were training here with the RYA Regional Training Group (RTG)
  • Eight Tera sailors were out training on two days with Fleet Captain Helen MacAlister
  • Two 12-year-olds were out twin wiring on ‘Bullet’
  • Four of our Feva sailors were at Datchet for RTG training
  • Five Lasers sailors had UKLA training at Portland, and four more were training here with our Head Coach Hugh Styles
  • 420 sailors were out training in Portland and Lymington, and four boats entered the Itchenor GP, with Lymington boats taking 1st and 2nd places
  • Six boats participated in three days of 29er transition sessions with Coach Hattie Rogers, the aim being to bring fresh sailors into the fleet.
  • Meanwhile, the more senior 29er sailors were training with the RYA Youth Squad in Portland, and then six boats competed in the Hayling GP where RLymYC claimed first place in both the boys and the girls pairings.

And in addition to all this, there were taster days…
