Last week saw the Club highlight of the year for our youth and junior sailors with an action-packed four days of racing, fun and socialising – Youth Week, supported by Walhampton School. Given the weather we have seen for most of the summer, it was not surprising that the conditions were challenging for this event.
The 181 sailors had to contend with winds of up to 18 knots, strong tides and torrential rain, with a sprinkling of sunshine but many races were completed, and a lot of fun was had.
The format of three days racing and a day of fun at the end seemed to work exceptionally well and it was lovely to see the Club alive with families for the Thursday prize-giving and evening disco.
In addition to the staff behind the scenes, I would particularly like to thank all the volunteers who helped to make this week so successful. 115 people, some helping for their umpteenth time, others for whom this was their first experience. Some organising for weeks beforehand or helping ashore, others on the water running racing and keeping the sailors safe.
To quote one of our long-time volunteers “Many congratulations to all who organise this great event and to all who willingly provide their support. It is a privilege to volunteer with such enthusiastic and fun-loving people.
