Learn sailing skills at our RYA OnBoard Centre every Wednesday!
This week, Wednesday Junior Sailing enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of sunshine and gentle wind despite the odd torrential downpour which seemed to strike the XOD sailors!
So far this year our RYA OnBoard centre, Wednesday Junior Sailing (WJS), has attracted registrations from over two hundred local children aged 8-18, who are keen to learn sailing and seamanship skills.
Children come regularly to WJS to enjoy sailing, rowing, and learning the rudiments of seamanship. This week the first session included sailors from four local schools: Ballard, Walhampton, Brockenhurst Primary and Durlston Court and we were delighted that teachers came along to lend a hand.
Many of the children at the second session were focused on achieving the next rung of the ladder card scheme as you can see from the pictures. In a nurturing environment, sailors work at their own pace following a card scheme which in turn can lead to RYA qualifications, from Stage 1 through to Instructor level. Everyone works at their own pace and the sense of achievement is huge. Find out about becoming a sailor at WJS here.
Wednesday Junior Sailing is run by lots of volunteers who give up their time to help encourage the next generation of water users. The most popular volunteers are of course the ladies handing out delicious hot chocolate and donuts! The number of young people who can participate in each session depends on the number of Sailing Instructor and volunteers – so please sign up to help if you can.
