Adventures for members aged under 8 years old and their families

Royal Lymington Yacht Club Shipmates

Ahoy! Shipmates allows the younger Members (under 8) of your family to join in with Club life and to share some great time on the water with their friends. Sailing in Scows with experienced sailors and accompanied by safety boats, the Shipmates set off on numerous adventures throughout the season, including a sail to picnic at Tanners Lane beach. Ice creams on return to shore are a frequent theme and paddle boards often taken to add to the fun.
In addition, after school sailing sessions take place on some Fridays during the sailing season, helping the children to learn the local area around the Club, as well as learning to sail. These sessions are followed by kids tea in the Club. Also planned for 2021 is a family camping weekend to Newtown Creek, RYA Level 1 training and racing with parents on the Friday of Junior Regatta week.
The Shipmates always have lots of fun, both on and off the water. River quizzes, private sessions at the Lymington Sea Water Baths and rewards for good helming from the safety boats, as well as the obligatory ice cream, all add to the excitement!

Sea Water Baths

A fantastic sun filled evening was had by the shipmates families tackling the inflateables at the Sea Water baths - with a private session it was a great opportunity for even the smallest participants to take part. Lots of falling off and splashing around meant that everyone was quite worn out after the hour - at least the ice cream kiosk was still open!

July Friday After School Sail.

Third time lucky! out last attempts had been thwarted by gales but this time was perfect with a late seabreeze helping the fleet of 6 scows through crooked lake and tacking up to Oxey Bouy - it was great to see so many children taking the helm! All efforts were rewarded with an ice cream as the boats gybed back into the club - it was a beautiful evening! A big thank you to the rescue boat crews for their help.

Junior Regatta

Whilst our group is too young to participate in the sailing activities, the organisers have kindly earmarked some events which we can take part in to be included in this brilliant week:

Tuesday 24th -  food and gutter boat racing - do buy tickets and hopefully we can get a Shipmates table together.
Friday 27th - the Shipmates have an early slot at the harbour games before the kids come ashore - put 11am in the diary and bring the kids down in wetsuits and life jackets to get involved! Tickets for lunch available for those who want and also we are welcome to the prize giving and hog roast up at Walhampton that afternoon, tickets available.

2020 Activity

Tuesday Sailing - 22 September 2020

Five scows sailed by Shipmates and their parents set off in a brisk breeze to explore the marshes. A high tide allowed them to scoot up Crooked Lake to Oxey Buoy - as they rounded the mark the challenge was to grab the tube of smarties from the support boat on the first go! This was followed by a breezy sail back downwind into the river, where the lifeboat flew by at high speed, before returning to the calmer waters off the Club.

Tuesday Sailing - 29 September 2020

Five Shipmates set off in their family bubbles for a short sail in the scows from the club to the quay. The took in the sights of moored boats, ferries and cormorants before tying up on the harbour master pontoon. Large quantities of ice cream were ordered and eaten on the quayside before returning gently to the club.

Scow Potter to Tanners Beach September 2020

Twenty Shipmates enjoyed a great sail through Pylewell to Tanners Beach. They set off in twelve scows in very light conditions however the wind quickly built giving a fantastic sail through the marshes. On arrival at Tanners the boats were moored behind the motherships offshore whilst we tucked into our picnics on the beach with plenty of mud jumping and donkey spotting too. The route home required plenty of tacking for which the reward was large ice-creams.

Scows on the Lymington River

Participants shall be guided by the RYA document Sailing & Racing in Mixed Households and by the control measures outlined in the Royal Lymington Yacht Club risk assessments for Dinghy Sailing and SUP, Pontoon and On The Water Activities and Clubhouse Operations.
