29er Grand Prix 2 - In Weymouth

On the weekend of the 10th/11th October, four RLymYC boats took part in the GP2 held at WPNSA. (Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy)

It was our first event together and it was an exhilarating first event. Four boats entered from our Lymington training group, trained by Hattie Rogers and Ross Banham.

The weekend started with a windy first day with the first two races gusting twenty seven knots. For the next two races the wind dropped but the chop increased. It was a challenging day.

Cruising Lectures

Our next talk was going to be  ‘Introducing LITA – Lymington & District’s International Town Twinning Association’ will be given by LITA’s Chairman, Nessa Ainsworth.  Nessa will describe how twinning between similar towns develops and sustains links across international borders and how LITA has linked Lymington to 3 twin towns in France, Spain and Germany. For over 30 years reciprocal trips and visits have helped foster deep friendships, as well as the pleasure of experiencing real life in these delightful twin-towns. Language skills are not essential but a willingness to join in with an engaged group is invaluable. This will be scheduled for Thursday Evening from 18:15 starts at 18:30 and will only be available by Zoom.

Unfortunately, at the last minute their fourth crew member, Mark Golton, was unable to attend.

Power Boaters Ahoy.

We have formed a small offshoot of the Cruising Group to provide further events for powerboats.  The speed of powerboats means that we can range further afield.

How about a night in Chichester taking in a performance at Chichester Theatre? Or a night in Weymouth with a close look at the Jurassic Coast?

Two years ago, we had a successful RIBAX Raid around the Isle of Wight. Last year we nearly reached Southampton Airport up the River Itchen. Before the first RIBAX event we had a get together to find out what blew boat owners horns.  We would like to do it again and will discuss it at the Club when it reopens.

Jeanne Socrates DID win the bravery award

Amplifon, a global leader in hearing care, organise a yearly prize to reward acts of bravery in at least eight different categories. One of which is the ‘Active Agers’ category for people over 60 years old who have done a jolly brave thing. We are very pleased to say that The 2020 Active Agers winner is Jeanne Socrates. This award recognises an individual aged 60 or over whose attitude and approach to ageing is an inspiration to us all. The winner has to be someone who has achieved significant success in the fields of sport, the arts, business, education or science and technology, or anyone who has accomplished a remarkable feat later in life. Jeanne Socrates became one such when she sailed into the record books last year and became the oldest person to sail around the world solo, non-stop and unassisted. The grandmother from Hampshire said “Winning this award is fantastic. I am absolutely staggered and I feel very humbled” The judges awarded the prize to her saying “At the time of life when people of her tender years are expected to be taking it easy, Jeanne went into turbo charge”  Well done Jeanne and many congratulations.

The View from the Editor's Chair

Well, we did have a viable newsletter packed with hope and good news. We were celebrating the opening with Mosimann’s new menu and really looking forward to Gala dinners, Quizzes, Ladies Luncheons, Power Boat meetings and many more Club orientated events.

However as we now know, the whole country (well England anyway) is in Lockdown as of this Thursday morning and no activities can take place.

It is too early for this newsletter to tell you what the Club will be doing over the next four weeks, but be assured that next week’s newsletter will have a lot more information. I suspect that on Monday or Tuesday there will be emails sent out announcing plans of what we will be doing -.

In the meantime, stay safe and warm and be ready to read next week’s.

Please encourage your children to attend either or both of the online meteorology lectures, even if they don’t sail. I am sure it will be fascinating.

I do hope you enjoy the Newsletter (what is left of it)

RLymYC Functions - Ventilation

Following government guidance to ventilate buildings in order to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, the Club will be monitoring levels of Carbon Dioxide at events in order to ensure that our ventilation is adequate.

At the lecture last week the CO2 level was around 500ppm for the duration of the evening. Several windows and doors were open, and the room temperature was cool, and cold in places (If the levels rise above 600ppm then more ventilation is required).

We will continue to monitor this going forward, but please bear this in mind and wear warmer clothing if you are planning to attend a function.

Below is the link to the government advice on the subject.
