Newsletter: 15th February 2021

From our New Commodore

I am honoured to have been appointed as your Commodore and to have the opportunity to lead the Club’s recovery from the impact of coronavirus. The Flag Officers, General Committee, Mosimann’s and our Staff are already working hard to ensure we are able safely restart activities and services as soon as allowed within Government regulations.  I would like to thank the Health & Safety, Sailing, House, Racing and Junior Committees for all their work in planning for the easing of lockdown restrictions.

We have a full programme of events scheduled for 2021 and I am sure all of us cannot wait to get back on the water and to meet friends in the bar and restaurant.

The Club has made significant progress over the past year with the outsourcing of the bar and catering activities to Mosimann’s and reductions in staff and overhead costs. However we still need to maintain our focus on the retention and recruitment of Members. The General Committee will be working on enhancing the value and quality of our services and improving our marketing and communications. A refresh of the Club website is already in progress. We will also be receiving the recommendations of the Governance Review Group.

Work is already underway planning an exciting range of events for our Centenary in 2022 and my aim is to go into next year with the Club in a strong and stable position.

I hope we will be able to reopen and resume activities soon and I look forward to welcoming you all back to the Club and wish you a successful 2021 sailing season.

Phil Lawrence

Commodore

Vince's Quiz Returns

Vince has agreed to do his very popular Quiz Night over Zoom – and we are going to try it.

The Club are offering a Fun Quiz on Friday 26th February starting at 19:00 hrs and aiming to finish around 21:00.

You will need to be part of a team and have an elected representative (Team Captain) who will give the team’s final answer to the QM. Teams can be up to eight Members but six preferred.

We will be using Zoom “breakout rooms” where each team will be put into a separate “room” to discuss their individual answers, come up with a set of team answers and then be returned to the main quiz for the correct answers. We envisage 6 rounds of 8-10 questions/round. Obviously, everyone will be on their best behaviour as we don’t do anything else in the RLymYC.

The prize for the winning team will be a hearty clap and a bottle of fine wine from your own cupboard.

If you do not have a team – we can fix you up on the night, just let us know when you book.

Please  can one person per team book by emailng [email protected] and confirm your team name, who is in your team and you nominated captain, if known.

Should you wish to order a meal from Mosimann’s to accompany this Fun Quiz we suggest you get your order in by Wednesday 24th Feb by calling 01590 671751 or email [email protected].  You can choose your meal here and see all info on deliveries/collection

Early Club Yachting in Lymington

Lymington had been a centre for ship and boatbuilding for centuries, so it was no surprise that yachting would take root here. In its earliest days, from around 1820, there were a number of wealthy owners, who lived in or around Lymington, and this led to the rapid growth of designing, building and racing some fairly large vessels in the vicinity.  It is somewhat astonishing to learn that one early Lymington yachtsman sailed his vessel outside the Needles – not for want either of his or the boat’s capabilities, but because he was nearly captured by French privateers.

The RORC Race

We finished, and we are chuffed to bits and disappointed at the same time. Thank you for following us. You may have noticed our route and speed was unusual. This is our adventure in brief.

Having missed our end-of-November crossing, due to Tim having a positive but symptomless Covid test we asked RORC if we could join their race from Calero Lanzarote where we have been staying, to Grenada. We had to buy an extra flare and add some racy numbers to put on the side of the boat, then hide our outboard motor, rib, paddle boards, piano, windsurfers and canoe below decks and then we were eligible to race

Winter Cruising Lecture No.17 - Hallooo to Haiti

Our very own Nick Ryley will be presenting ‘Hallooo to Haiti’ and Members who’ve enjoyed his previous lectures will know that his new talk promises to be another crowd pleaser, so please do join us on Zoom this Thursday 18th February 2021 at 18.30hrs.

This lecture has risen from the deep past when navigation was by Sextant and Papa Doc was ruling Haiti. It is the story of an America’s Cup 12m that went Ocean voyaging and found herself in Cap-Haitian being welcomed by the Ton Ton Macoute.

Zoom based Race Team Training

I would also like to say thanks to Simon van der Byl, ably assisted by Roger and Gillian for an excellent talk on Course Setting on Tuesday 9th February. It was “attended” by more than 50 people. Along with all the previous sessions, a recording of this is now available on the website.

Recording and Scoring with Malcolm McKeag

Too often – and by too many – ‘driving the clipboard’ is seen as one of the lowlier roles in the Race Management Team.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  In a sense it is perhaps the single most vital task the team has to perform – and perform accurately and promptly.  We can get away with a poor starting line, a boring course, a race too long or too short: all that any and all of those mean is that we haven’t run as good a race as we might and that we and the sailors would like.  But if we do not record properly who started, who finished and give them a score at the end we don't have a race at all.  We also have to record and investigate what happened to the ones who started but did not finish.

The Zoom link to Malcolm’s talk is here

Cruising Lecture 16.  Youth & Junior Sailors

Our Thursday Evening Lecture on 11th February 2021 was a lively and inspirational series of short presentations by our Junior & Youth  Sailors, all delivered via Zoom and compered by Joff McGill.

This talk was very well received by a truly international audience of Members and parents, and generated the Cruising Division’s largest online attendance to date.

CENTENARY BOOK - ILLUSTRATIONS INVITED

The Club is producing a book to celebrate its Centenary.  Artists are invited to produce images which would be suitable to be considered to illustrate the chapter on social events which have taken place at the Club through the years.   Anyone who is interested to submit work for this should contact Josie Nieves on [email protected], for more details about the subject matter.

Safety Boat Training

The Health & Safety Committee have issued new guidance on the manning of Open Safety Boats for Club Activities. There is a requirement for at least one of the crew to have been trained as Safety Boat crew within the past 5 years.  At the present time we are unable to undertake the “On the Water Training” due to Covid restrictions, but we will proceed with the “Shoreside Training” and undertake “On the Water Training” when we can.  If you have not attended Safety Boat Training or a Refresher within the past 5 years it is imperative that you attend the Shoreside Training.

Roger Wilson will be conducting Shoreside Training on the following dates   18:00 on Wednesday 17th February and 3rd March.

The View from the Editor's Chair

The AGM went off without a hitch and our new Commodore,  RC Sailing and 4 new GC Members have been elected. We said “Goodbye” to Roger in the last issue, so this one is to say “Hello” to Phil and all the others. You will note that both FO.s have started with an item in the Newsletter. Long may that continue.

After the recent week’s extremely cold weather I could not resist Robin’s picture taken up near the Walhampton Arms (No he could not go in) It shows icicles on a bush next to a large puddle where traffic has splashed very cold road water onto the bush and frozen.  Quite a unique picture.

The lovely Mrs Editor being the Chair of the Social sub Committee suggested we indulge in a Valentine’s day meal from Mosimann’s, and this is after I had taken the bins out (Romantic gesture no.1) and bought a vase full of red roses (Romantic gesture no.2 – a base coverer). So we enjoyed a lovely fish dish after Soup and Salmon starters and a dessert. Over 50 couples took part and we were entertained by a Soul/Jazz Singer called Rebecca Snook , all this after a demo from Nick on preparation of the food. Judged well worth it by many.

The Vendée Globe race is coming to a conclusion, with 19 boats home. Pip Hare in Medallia has got in and the only Brit left is Ms Merron, more details below.

Once again, I know I said “no more” from the Knights but that was until I received a lovely report and photos from them, as you will see.  They were very chuffed to hear that we had been following their progress in our Newsletters. I think that is what it is for.

Lockdown in Lymington continues on its inexorable way. Most residents in our area have now been vaccinated, with only the young families to go. I was surprised how ‘uplifted ‘ all felt when they had received theirs. Let us hope that the ever increasing rate of vaccine distribution continues until the whole town is done. I think we will all feel much safer then.

 Stay safe everyone.

Conversion Services offered to Club Members

One of our younger Club Members is offering Members the opportunity to digitise analogue home movies onto a more stable format. Most home movies (eg. Super 8) are getting on for at least twenty years old now, and the chemical composition of the film emulsions is breaking down. Transferring your family memories onto USB stick or HDD (Hard Drives)  has been recommended for many years. Now is the time to dig out those canisters from the loft and get their contents transferred.

The Vendée Globe S.H. Ocean Race

The first British finisher is now home. Pip Hare in Medallia arrived as the 19th finisher at 01:00 hrs on Friday morning into Sables D’Olonne looking very relieved and feeling “incredible”. She is already planning for the 2024 race. The last couple of days were very frustrating, but she had no regrets over the whole race. She was unable to beat the time set by Ellen McArthur, which had been her goal.

Welcome back Pip good to see you safe and well.

Prada Cup

As of today Sir Ben is 4 – 0 down. However we know that does not mean it is all over. He always has something up his sleeve. So we all look forward to the next three races minimum. Congrats to the Italians for winning 4 races well, but let them be advised to “Watch Out”
