Newsletter: 8th March 2021

3/8/2021

We are looking forward to welcoming you back

The team and I are in a buzz of activity gearing up the Clubhouse ready to welcome you all back. The boatmen have been busy working through their winter maintenance schedule to ensure that all our Club RIBs are back in the water ahead of the 29th March and for those of you or have been lucky enough to get out into the Solent exercising this week then you will have noticed that the race marks are now back in their pride of place ready for the Spring Series to commence on April 11th.

There are a few changes of sponsor this year which Membership Secretary Maria, with the help of Nick Ryley and James Hoare have secured. Look out for the unveiling of our new centenary logo on Mark “@”.

Annual Cruising Dinner 21st May 2021

A Hoard of Silver, a Black-Tie Dinner and a Log Competition all coinciding on 21 May 2021

Your Cruising Division has responded to the latest Roadmap from the Government and moved its Annual Dinner and Prizegiving to Friday 21 May – essentially the first Friday evening after indoor hospitality restarts in Step Three. Bridge for the RNLI 5th April

The Club is due to start Monday Evening racing on April 12th. In normal years we would have a bridge fund raising event for the RNLI on the preceding Monday; why should this year be any different?

On April 5th at 16.30 we shall run RealBridge on-line for allcomers, not just Club Members. The cost will be £8 per head, which will cover a donation and the RealBridge fee. Players should come as a pair and must register with me and pay in advance. As you probably know all charities have been hit hard by the lack of events over the last 13 months, so please spread the word about this as far as you are able.

Dinghy Park and the Club Sublet System- an update

2021/22 Dinghy Park & Balance Pond update

Due to government restrictions, we have delayed the posting out  of the allocation letters & we will be encouraging Members not to return their dinghies until 29th March. During this time, we will be re allocating some of the spaces to allow for more berths.

For those Members who are disappointed that they were not allocated a berth, we would liketo encourage them to use the Sublet System. The Sublet System was trialled successfully in 2020 and will continue to be used in 2021. The system allows members the possibility of finding Dinghy Park berths to use temporarily during the season.

The instructions for the Sublet System and the Dinghy Park Regulations are published on the club website and can be found here

Winter Cruising Lecture No.20 'On Shoulders of Giants'

This week’s Thursday Evening Lecture will be the last of the current winter series, but fear not, we are going out on a high.

Join us on Thursday 11th March 2021 for the victorious return of the ‘On Shoulders of Giants’ crew - Justin Houlton, Rauri Hadlington, Dan Wakerley & Mark Golton - and their follow-up lecture about the ‘Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2020’ Race.

Club member Justin & his team will tell the epic story of how they left the Canaries last December in a 24-foot Rannoch R45 ocean rowing boat and raced 3000 miles across the Atlantic to reach English Harbour, Antigua in January 2021 - ‘On Shoulders of Giants’ were the first home in their race class and second overall.

Justin and crew are still aiming to raise £50,000 for two extraordinary charities; the “My Name’5 Doddie Foundation” for Motor Neurone Disease & “Pursuing Independent Paths” which helps adults with learning disabilities to achieve independence.

To date they have achieved over £42,000 but are just short of their audacious target, so if you would like to help please -

Mens Yoga at the Royal Lymington

It all started one evening during Thursday Racing whilst on William Newton’s Jelly Baby. I was discussing whilst sat on the rail that I could not move around the boat these days as well as I could when younger. “You need to take up Yoga”, said my fellow crew member “and I know just the Yoga teacher, she’s right up your street”. Really, I thought, and within a few days I was enrolled in Dawn Wade’s Yoga class.

I duly turned up and joined a mixed class and was soon stretching and bending thinking this is easy and can’t see what all the fuss was about. I must admit I felt a bit of a plonker to start with, stretched out of the floor trying to follow what Dawn was saying but I thought it must be doing me some good so I will stick with it. Later that afternoon I thought, my backs stiff, and my legs ache, maybe there is more to this Yoga than I firstly thought.

Report on Cruising Lecture 19.

Last Thursday’s Cruising Division was presented by fellow Club Member, Peter Bell, who described two idyllic months of sun, sea, sailing and the occasional sherry in his lecture ‘Southern Iberia - Cruising in the Covid Year’.

In late June 2020, Peter and Mary escaped to their 42-foot yacht ‘Dofesaba II’ in Spain, and after some Health & Safety defying maintenance in Benalmádena, embarked on a summer cruise along the south coast of Spain & Portugal.

For more details of the Lecture and a link so it can be downloaded

In the meantime, if you missed any of the Cruising Division’s previous talks from Spring 2020 onwards, you can catch up now at:

Another idea from your Social Sub Committee

Let’s put this virtual show on,  in the virtual barn

Send Gillian your zoom recordings, videos from your phone or photos or maybe write something, as Mark Harris did this week about his yoga practice during lockdown, with a photo of teacher Dawn, plus a lovely story of how yoga was first introduced to the Club.

We don’t want you to be limited by any suggestions we might make, so over to you.

Why not share what you have been doing, during these three long lockdowns and entertain your fellow Club Members at the same time?  We can help with the writing part if that isn’t your strength.

No competition involved, just for fun. Obviously do ask permission if you wish to use a photo of someone other than yourself.  Details below on how to submit:

Details are here on how to submit your efforts, and we have a friendly editor to collate entries, so please send your video recordings of up to 5 minutes - this could be zoom or phone or  other media or photos.

If your video is on your computer please send them  directly to Gillian by using the free & easy We Transfer website (no registration required)   https://wetransfer.com/

Once you are there click on the ‘We’ logo at the top left which opens up an area for you to transfer your files – please send your file to [email protected].

If your video is on your phone,  please use What’s App and send to Gillian’s work mobile: 07516029745.

Online Art Group 2021

This is the new picture for this week. It is a collection of ceramic objects (Objets d’Art Club?)

Please let Josie Nieves have a .pdf or .jpg of any images you may produce from it as soon as you are comfortable with your work.  ([email protected]).

We will put these images on the WebSite and then a new pictorial challenge will be presented.

Please take out your paints and pencils, your iPads and papers. While away the hours when it is dark, rainy and cold, even if it clears up a bit by letting your creative juices run.... we look forward to seeing the results.

CENTENARY BOOK - ILLUSTRATIONS INVITED

The Club is producing a book to celebrate its Centenary.  Artists are invited to produce images which would be suitable to be considered to illustrate the chapter on social events which have taken place at the Club through the years.   Anyone who is interested to submit work for this should contact Josie Nieves on [email protected], for more details about the subject matter.

Flower Arrangements to Cheer

As the darkness of winter is finally ebbing away, we can bring brightness into our homes with flowers, and foliage  They do not always have to be fresh, you can use a mixture of dried hydrangea heads, fallen twigs, and silk foliage, to create a stunning display.

An aged Azalea, that has spent all summer in a shady part of the garden, is so rewarding when it comes into bloom over the winter months, and one's patience is rewarded.

Hopefully it will not be too long before the RLymYC will be welcoming  Members again with our beautiful arrangements seen dotted about the Club, brightening it up, and bringing good cheer.

The View from the Editors' Chairs

Our lead item from Kirsty is full of hope and enthusiasm for the future of the Club as we come out of lockdown. It is reported that a head of steam is being generated so that the Club will be ready for whenever it is allowed to open. We are poised.

The team here at Newsletter House (Editors, Sub Editors, Compositors, Linotype operators, printers and other associated trades) all wish the Husband family a happy, healthy and relaxing birth experience.

The Cruising division is confidant that lockdown is coming to an end. So much so that they are booking their “Annual Dinner”. We will announce when tickets are available as I suspect there will be a big rush for this first dinner of the year. (We are going – I shall wear my very posh frock)

Good to see a response from the Men’s Yoga team to the zoomy talent request from the Social Sub Committee – nice one Mark. Over now to the rest of you.

Lockdown in Lymington grinds away. On our daily walk we see many people use the launching ramp. We see the sea wall path is becoming quite crowded. Several ice cream vendors are now venturing out. Boats are being moved in Berthon and the Yacht Haven. There is the sound of power tools in both shipyards. It is beginning to sound faintly, like spring in a normal year. To misquote a Disney character “Let it grow”.

 Stay safe everyone.

           Peter Bell – Editor

[email protected]

I don’t think Mr Editor can include a mention of last week’s lecture, as it was he who gave the talk.  It was great to remember that last year we did indeed get away for eight weeks in the Spanish and Portuguese sunshine - which is extremely hotter than ours.  While Mrs Editor (me) was drinking water, with electric fans on and slowly doing boatwork (marine housework),  Peter was working the boat, drinking beer or striding out playing golf in 32-36 degrees heat, wondering what on earth was wrong with his wife.

Peter’s positive attitude is always inspiring; thus when people worried about would we get back into the UK?  what if we were quarantined in Portugal,? would we be able to sail from Spain to Portugal?  what if we couldn’t get a mooring for our boat? etc etc, we always think, “Well, what if we don’t have any problems?” and that turned out to be the case.  A pleasant reminder during this wintery lockdown that there were some months last year when life returned to something near a normal summer. Thank you Peter.
