Volunteers

Volunteering at the RLymYC

Volunteering is a great way to get to know people within the Club and also for you to feel you are “joining in” and being a Member. There are many opportunities for men women and youth to join in.

Below are examples where you can help and get to know more Members.

The Club’s diverse programme of sailing events, committees and assistance programmes create a wide range of volunteer opportunities available to all Club Members.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in Club life; join our "Sailing Event Teams" and build on experience and see some exciting events from the water, or join a group of Members helping the Club in other ways.

Sailing Event Teams

There are many duties associated with running events. Whether you are relatively in-experienced or fully qualified, we would very much like to hear from you.
These include
  • Rib Drivers for safety boats and mark laying.
  • Flag timers and record keepers
  • Racing Management
  • RYA courses we run at the Club
We have these needs during the year off and on for
  • Thursday Night Racing
  • Wednesday Afternoon Juniors
  • Friday Evening Juniors
  • Weekends; when we are putting on events for Nationals or Class meets

To view full descriptions of the available roles and duties, please click here.  All of these duties are available for many of the coming events. If you would like any more information on any of the roles, or the training available please do not hesitate to contact the Sailing Manager

NB. Sometimes races are overseen from the Starting Platform and sometimes from the back of the committee boat. Getting on to the platform can be quite physically challenging, especially at low tide, if you think that you may find this difficult, please check with one of the Senior Boatmen before signing up for Race Team duties.

Within the Clubhouse

Throughout the year we run various events that do not run themselves. You can help by volunteering to help whenever an event is due, there can be lots of preparation involved, e.g.  at Christmas, there are trees to erect, decorations to put up (& take down near 12th night), Santa’s Grotto to build, presents to wrap, children to control and expectations to manage.
Flowers around the club are ordered, but traditionally it has been up to members to make the Club house look its best.

We run Quizzes and Lunches, film nights and lectures; all require some preparation.

During the recent past we have also encouraged Members to volunteer as greeting and waiting staff for lunch and evening sessions whenever food is available. If you wish to join in please click here to see what is involved and click the link below to sign up to a shift.  Please email gillian@rlymyc.org.uk with any questions.

Non-Sailing Events

Although the primary part of our volunteer programme is helping the sailing programmes, there are other opportunities too.

We have various House Committees which run our social events, select our wines, assist in suggesting catering options, and manage our building and maintenance projects.

We have volunteers who assist in some aspects of our IT and website management and in maintaining and operating our audio / visual systems.
The Club's archives are maintained by a volunteer.  See the current site here

Our printed and electronic publications are edited and published by volunteer members. For examples of previous & the latest Newsletters Click here

There is also a committee that carries out Building Maintenance and sees to the upkeep of the front garden. Handy folk can join this too.

If you are interested in assisting in just general volunteering, we can talk to you and suggest where you might be very useful. Please contact the Club here

It is possible that you may wish to volunteer for only one thing specifically once a year (eg to help Santa) and do not want to be involved with committees. We will put you in touch with the Committee Chair responsible and you can discuss it with them.
