Nordic Folkboat Racing

Now, in it’s 77th year, the Nordic Folkboat is a timeless classic, attractive and a pleasure to sail. Well suited to both cruising and racing it makes a versatile and inexpensive route to a great variety of sailing.  The Nordic Folkboat appeals to a wide variety of sailors, it is an ideal boat for a family to race, but also providing good one design racing to satisfy the keen racers.

There are some 40 Nordic Folkboats based in the West Solent, with about 30 boats in Lymington and the rest over in Yarmouth. At the RLymYC we have a full fixture list with regular racing every week to suit all-comers. Boats from Yarmouth regularly join us to swell the number of boats coming to the line.
The core of our Nordic Folkboat racing at the Royal Lymington is the Saturday Series, which this year runs from April 27th to September 28th 2019. Most races are scheduled to start at 14.10 and generally run for around 2 hours. Multiple discards remove the need to start all races, thereby allowing flexibility to accommodate both crew availability and weather conditions.
The West Solent Series offers eight longer passage-style races including a Race to Cowes, the Prince Consort Race, the Round The Island Race and the Christchurch Ledge race. This series is run in conjunction with the Royal Solent Y.C.

Nordic Folkboats have their own start in the Thursday Evening Racing series at the RLymYC. As always, this is a very popular series and gives us all a chance of winding down and a good social get-together after the race.
This year the RLymYC is hosting the Nordic Nationals on September 21st and 22nd. Folkboat Week in Yarmouth will start on August 24th and is always a great event. Over 50 boats attended the 50th Folkboat Week anniversary in 2015.
In addition, there are several regattas during the year with Nordic Folkboat starts, including the Royal Lymington Spring Series, the Summer Keelboat Regatta, the Tattinger Regatta at the Royal Solent Y.C. and the Autumn Series hosted by Lymington Town S.C. In all, there are over 75 Nordic Folkboat race starts in the West Solent during year, more than enough for even the most dedicated racer!
Finally, while we tend to concentrate on one-design racing for the Nordic Folkboat, we should also acknowledge the boat’s performance under IRC Handicap.
This is epitomized by recent results in the Round The Island Race. In the past 12 years, Nordic Folkboats have taken the over-all IRC First Prize, the Gold Roman Bowl, no less than four times! This in addition to six second places and one third place in the same period. No other class or design comes close to this performance under IRC handicap.
So, if you fancy joining us, and maybe having a crack at winning one of the country’s premier sailing events, there are several ways of joining our fleet. Anyone interested in learning more about the Nordic Folkboat, whether as potential crew or prospective owner should contact the Class Captain or a member of the committee.
